What to Expect During Your Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Extraction of a wisdom tooth is a common oral surgery procedure that helps to treat pain, infection, and other complications caused by problematic third molars. If you're experiencing discomfort or your dentist has recommended removal, understanding the process can ease anxiety and help you feel more prepared.

When Does a Wisdom Tooth Need to Be Extracted?

Wisdom teeth typically emerge between the ages of 17 and 25. In some cases, they erupt without issue; however, when there is not enough space in your jaw to accommodate these molars problems may arise such as:

  • Impaction: The tooth is trapped beneath the gum or bone.
  • Crowding: The tooth pushes against nearby teeth, causing alignment issues.
  • Partial Eruption: The tooth emerges at an angle or only partially breaks through the gum, increasing the risk of infection.
  • Decay or Gum Disease: Difficult-to-clean wisdom teeth can harbor bacteria, leading to cavities or gum inflammation.

In these cases, an extraction may be recommended to prevent more serious complications down the road.

Signs and Symptoms You May Need an Extraction

You may need a wisdom tooth removed if you’re experiencing:

  • Persistent jaw pain or swelling
  • Red, swollen, or bleeding gums in the back of your mouth
  • Difficulty opening your mouth fully
  • Bad breath or an unpleasant taste due to infection
  • Headaches or earaches related to jaw pressure
  • Visible crowding or shifting of nearby teeth

A dental exam and X-rays can confirm whether your wisdom teeth are causing issues or are likely to in the future.

What to Expect During Wisdom Tooth Extraction

At Rejuvenescence Oral & Facial Surgery, Dental Implants, and Cosmetics, your comfort and safety are our top priorities. Before the procedure, you’ll have a consultation with our oral surgeon. Dr. Davis will review your X-rays, medical history, and discuss sedation options, which may include local anesthesia, Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas), Conscious sedation, or IV general anesthesia, depending on the complexity of the extraction.

The procedure typically takes 45 minutes to an hour and you’ll be made comfortable while Dr. Davis carefully removes the wisdom tooth. In some cases, stitches may be used to close the area.

After the procedure, you'll recover until you're ready to go home. Post-operative instructions will be provided, including guidance on managing discomfort, swelling, and diet. Most patients recover within a few days to resume normal activity, although complete healing may take a few months.
